David Livingstone Safari Lodge, ZambiaAs befits its name, the David Livingstone Safari Lodge is built in gorgeous old colonial style. It’s close to the town of Livingstone in Zambia and has an elegant reception leading to a large dining area, a bar and terrace by the Zambezi River, and an invitingly warm infinity pool right on the riverbank.
It’s a really elegant and stylish treat of a hotel.
Five executive suites have sunken Jacuzzis while 72 luxury rooms are beautifully appointed with large bathrooms, a working area with free Wi-Fi and balconies facing the river.
The hotel’s excellent activities office can book you on trips to walk with lions, ride an elephant, visit the Falls from the Zambian side and sail on the Lady Livingstone, an elegant cruiser. That sails in time for sunset and it’s well worth the fare.
If you sit on the top deck you can chat to the captain about river life and he'll point out the sights for you - like croc and hippo.
The hotel itself is built of wood, natural stone and thatch with lovely African artifacts as the decor and wooden walkways between the different areas, including a relaxing platform directly over the river.
The service is great, and the staff was happy to delegate a driver for me to drive me into town and show me around.
Leave time to enjoy the well-equipped gym and award-winning spa, where I had a sugar scrub followed by a massage. The exfoliation was so invigorating that I’m sure left weighing 2kg less, but I put it all on again with a delicious supper in the Kalai restaurant, looking out over the Zambezi as the sun set.
